You can almost smell the formaldehyde! Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and Modality Inc. have put together, exclusively for iPhone, a collection of cadaver dissection anatomy flash cards. Included in the app are 211 full-colour photos, based on the printed atlas by Joel Vilensky, Rohen’s Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body, Sixth Edition.

Anatomy Apps: Similar User Interface, but Different Images, Could be Used for Patient Education on the iPad

The iPad has created a great deal of buzz in the tech community. The medical and healthcare community at large are set to benefit from some of its key features, mentioned in our prior posting. One of these key features, the beautiful 1024 by 768 pixel, 9.7 inch screen, is set to change the overall user experience for medical apps that have a focus on imaging, such as anatomy applications. Although this medical app review was done using an iPod Touch, we can only imagine how much more aesthetically pleasing the iPad’s experience will be. As will be discussed later in the post, these applications are a perfect example of how the upcoming iPad could be used in the clinic setting to improve patient education.

Campbell's Operative Orthopedics App for the iPhone: What Every Orthopedic Surgeon Wants

Campbell’s Operative Orthopedics is a cornerstone of any orthopedic surgeon’s library. It’s one of the few volumes that every resident knows he or she will have to own – no point complaining about the price. If a junior resident shows up to do a case and has not at least read the requisite chapter in Campbell’s, then they should be prepared to go no further than a few hours of holding retractors for the attending and making idle chit-chat.

So, the arrival of an iPhone version of this four volume to me is certainly an important milestone. How did they do? This full review will explain.

Building an app sector here: Yep, there are developers for that

RALEIGH – The Triangle, long regarded as a technology hub, is adding another spoke as a center for mobile applications developers.

Raleigh’s iPhone App Developers group is the third largest such group in the country, according to social networking site meetup.com. The 171 members in the Raleigh group are fewer only than the 519 in Silicon Valley and the 413 in Atlanta.

The community of mobile app, or application, developers follows the burgeoning growth of Apple iPhone users and the sale and distribution of apps through Apple’s online store, which launched in the summer of 2008.

ABI Research projects that by 2015, more than 240 million business customers will be accessing services and applications through mobile devices in what is estimated to become a $5.2 billion market.

REVIEW: Procedures Consult – Musculoskeletal (for iPhone)

In my Residency program, we have a 3 week rotation specifically in Musculoskeletal (MSK) things; most of this time is spent at the office of a local Orthopaedic Surgeon (“orthopod”) who does not do major surgeries but rather many physical examinations and small procedures like joint injections and aspirations. We also spend time at the cast clinic with the orthopods and plastic surgeons, practice reading plain films in radiology, and spend time with a sports medicine doc in town. This means lots of procedures!

Don’t let the “Internal Medicine” part of the title throw you – there aren’t a lot of General Internists who would be doing these procedures on a regular basis. More likely, Rheumatologists (a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine concerned with disease of the joints and connective tissues), ER docs, small town GPs, sports medicine specialists, and orthopedic surgeons will be the ones sticking needles into joints; and ER doctors will be the ones reducing dislocations and splinting things. However, on occasion, other types of physicians may need to aspirate a possibly septic joint on the ward, throw on a splint on something, or reduce a painful dislocation before referring a patient to another caregiver.

CHICAGO - Image viewing applications might seem like a natural choice for radiologists seeking to outfit their iPhones for professional use. App Review: Recently Released USMLE Question Bank: Lange's Q&A USMLE Step 2 CK

If you type "USMLE Step 2" into the App Store, you don't get many results. One of the applications that shows up is the recently released Lange Q&A: USMLE Step 2 CK app, produced by Modality, and costing $33.99. We've reviewed other USMLE study apps for the iPhone in the past, such as the USMLE disease deck, and not been huge fans.

This time I was hoping for better results. I'm just a few weeks removed from taking step 2 CK (hooray!), and figured it would be the perfect time to review this app. I'll admit, I've been a fan of Lange products since using their Pharmacology flashcards for Step 1 studying. I found the flashcards to be well written, concise, and high yield. I was hoping this question bank on the iPhone would give me similar results.

Musculo Medical App Brings Back Classic Netter Drawings: Netter's Flash Cards Review

In the personal library of many physicians, there is at least one hard bound collection of beautifully hand drawn color illustrations by Frank Netter MD (1906-1991). These drawings were the work of an immensely gifted graphic artist who, by stripping away every unimportant detail, made human anatomy even more vivid and more beautiful. Frank Netter was also a physician with deep appreciation for the varieties and causes of human diseases. NEW YORK (AP) — Frommer's travel guides are becoming available for download to iPhones and the iPod Touch.

Digital editions of Frommer's 2008 guides to New York, San Francisco, London and Paris are $9.99 from Apple.com via the new Apple App Store and from iTunes.

More Frommer's guides will be out later this year for downloading. Once the books are loaded, users can browse ad-free content without an Internet connection. The format also offers interactive maps, Web and phone links through the touchscreen interface.

Modality Inc.'s big break came calling via mobile phone.

Right after Apple Inc. announced in March that it would allow software developers to build applications for its new iPhone 3G, Modality, of Durham, N.C., got busy.

And on July 11, when Apple launched the phone and the Apple App Store to hawk those applications, Modality's product -- digital medical terminology flashcards -- was among the available downloads.

One taker was Jeff Midgley, a physician assistant at the Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn. He says he wanted something in his pocket that he could show to patients when they ask him about a simple sprain or fracture. Rather than showing them an X-ray, he can just call up the cards on his iPhone and zoom in on the bone in the correct anatomical position.
